  • My step-grandson (Milo Cupic) just moved to the USA (Boca Raton, Florida) about a month ago from Montenegro. He is still learning English and is in the ESL program at Boca Raton High School where he is enrolled as a sophomore. He describes some of his teachers as impatient and annoyed when he doesn’t understand them and asks for repetition or clarification. He has not been able to make friends yet and finds himself eating lunches alone. In the former socialist Yugoslavia of which Montenegro was a part, there remains a cultural resistance to religion, even the Orthodox Church which predominates in that country. His grandmother in Montenegro would take him to the Orthodox Church twice yearly at Orthodox Christmas and Easter. That’s his only exposure to church at all. My wife and I have convinced him to attend church with us once, an experience he described as weird. Orthodox churches in reportedly have dark, moody services where sitting is not allowed. Our service here at the church my wife and I regularly attend while conservative and traditional is bright, joyful and filled with much choral and congregational music. His father and stepmother do not regularly participate in congregational worship. I’m concerned about his lack of friends and his eating lunches alone. It would be wonderful if some school peers would reach out to him. He is quite handsome, athletic and extremely polite. He’s a really nice kid struggling with fitting into this very different environment from Montenegro.
